Transcription: Chris Hennessy (crazydiamond_75@hotmail.com)

Although this song doesn't have any recognizable guitar on it I don't

think (it does bass a little), I liked it enough to figure out a way you

can do it on guitar. I'm not sure how it will play on electric since I

figured it out on an acoustic and electrics tend to sound different.

I don't know why. I call him Gerald.

He's getting rather old, but he's a good mouse.

D

You're the kind of girl that fits in with my world.

I'll give you anything, everything if you want things.

You're the kind of girl that fits in with my world.

I'll give you anything, everything if you want things.

I know a room of musical tunes.

Some rhyme, some ching. Most of them are clockwork.

Let's go into the other room and make them work.

This the last Barrett's song with the Pink Floyd.
Syd leaves the band on 6 April 1968.

I notice that in same books there are some different phrases
in comparison with the "Saurceful of Secrets" booklet:
line 3-4  "the room" instead of "the moon"
line 6    "in rag" instead of "in red"

VEGETABLE MAN
Pink Floyd
(Barrett)

  Transcribed by J. Martin

Comment: Due to the RoIO nature of all copies of this song,

the notes and chords may be up or down several cents

or anywhere in between due to poor copying

(or maybe it was originally recorded bad).

For the recording that this transcription was taken from (the studio version),

I had to tune down a bit (about -15 cents) to match the recording.

IT'S NO GOOD TRYING

transcribed by Greg O'Beirne (gobeirne@tartarus.uwa.edu.au)

(This is the solo acoustic version found on Track 15 of
"The Madcap Laughs" disc of the Crazy Diamond box set.  It was
recorded on 11th April, 1969, at Abbey Road Studios, London.
It's virtually the same chords that he played on "No Good Trying"
on the original "The Madcap Laughs" album, but the bass on that
track implies slightly different chords and spacings.  All the
chords on this version are to be played as standard E-form
barre(tt) chords.  Just adlib during the E section between each
verse for a random number of bars...)

     G
It's no good trying to place your hand

where I can't see because I understand
            A
that you're different from me

yes I can tell

and you're rocking me backwards

and you're rocking towards the
C                        D

OCTOPUS

The version of "Octopus" (as transcribed by Michelle Crazy Diamond?) that has been
floating around the web for a number of years was so wrong it was comical!
The following is the correct way to play Syd Barrett's "Octopus."

James.allfallup@aol.com

Intro:                                    Verses:

    B     E7    G     C7    A                F#7     B7

E---7-----------3-----------------------   ----------7------

Note: Syd uses all standard shaped barre chords except for the E7 & C7 in the intro,
      and the F#7 & B7 verses

!!!Also: Syd tunes his guitar down a half step; B sounds like Bb, etc...

LOVE YOU

transcribed by Dave Fleming (dave@Glue.umd.edu)

For the intro I stick to E (or E7) shape barre chords.  This is

a pretty simplistic approach on my part which, of course, I don't

think this is 100% right, so if you have any improvements, please

let me know:

Intro:

     A     577655

      B     799877

      A7    575655

      G7    353433

      F#7   242322

      A     577655

      B     799877

      E     022100

For the verses, I use the following forms,

      A     577655

      A#    688766

      B     799877

      E     x79997

Verses:

A

Honey, love ya,

                                   A#

Honey, little honey, funny, Sunday morning

B

Love you more funny, Love in the skyline baby.

E

Ice cream, 'scuse me,

                                     A        E

I've seen you looking good the other evening

Oh, you, dig it

Had to smile just an hour or so

Are we in love like I think we be?

It ain't a long rhyme, it took ages to think

I think I'll hurl it in the water, baby.

Repeat first verse

Flaking you are

A nice little one to put it all around

It's just good, I like it

Hey, hey, hey. Suppose some time that day

Whoopee, swing it on over across to me.

Repeat first verse

Good time rocker woman

Will stray, ah, pieces a little creepy

We shine so sleepy,

So whoopee

That's how you look

Repeat first verse

her sister said that my girl was gone
B                             E
"But come inside, boy, and play, play, play me a song!"

Additional Lyrics:

(w/PART I)
I said "Yeah! Here I go"
She's kinda cute, don't you know?
That after a while of seeing her smile
I knew we could make it, make it in style!

(w/PART II)
So now I've got all I need
She and I are in love, we've agreed
she likes this song and my others too
so now you see my world is...
because of this tune!

(w/PART I)
What a boon this tune!
I tell you soon
We'll be lying in bed, happily wed,
and I won't think of that girl
or what she said...

Lean out your window, golden hair
I heard you singing in the midnight air
my book is closed, I read no more
watching the fire dance on the floor
I've left my book,
I've left my room

For I heard you singing through the gloom
singing and singing, a merry air
lean out the window, golden hair...

SHE TOOK A LONG COLD LOOK

                                           Transcribed by FISH

           A                 D

She took a long cold look at me

    D                            A

and smiled and gazed all over my arm

             A                  D

she loves to see me get down to ground

    D                               A

she hasn't time just to be with me

            A                     D

her face between all she means to be

   D                              A

to be extreme, just to be extreme

         A                D

a broken pier on the wavy sea

    D                                A

she wonders why for all she wants to see...

          G

But I got up and I stomped around

                                            E           E7

and hid the piece where the trees touch the ground...

(Then, to imitate Syd trying to play while turning his lyric

sheet, just

strike the A and the low E about 467823823 times...)

           A                      D

The end of truth that lay out the time

      D                         A

spent lazing here on a painting green

          A                 D

a mile or more in a foreign clime

   D                     A

to see farther inside of me.

            A                D

And looking high up into the sky

  D                                 A

I breathe as the water streams over me...

IF IT'S IN YOU

        G           D
Yes I'm thinking of this, yes I am
                                     G
puddle town, Tom was the underground
                    D
hold you tighter so close, yes you are
                              G
please hold on to the steel rail

Chorus:

C                     D    G

C

D
she's mean go-getter

gotta write her a letter.

Did I wink of this, I am
                                     G
yum, yummy, yum, don't, yummy, yum, yom, yom...
                      D
Yes, I'm thinking of this, in steam
                            G
skeleton kissed to the steel rail

Chorus:

chugging along with a funnel of steam
all the fives crock Henrietta
she's mean go-getter

LATE NIGHT

Transcription by Dave Fleming (dave@Glue.umd.edu)

Here are the backing chords to Syd Barrett's "Late Night"
from the album "The Madcap Laughs" - one of my favorites.  If
anyone could help me work up a nice solo acoustic arrangement, I'd
be grateful.

I have not tabbed out the
solo/slide guitar parts, because I figure one may as well play
whatever one feels, but if there's interest in a tab of the
parts from the album, I could give it a shot.

Corrections, of course, are most welcome.

Note:  CaddG = x32013

B                A
When I woke up today
                         G
And you weren't there to play
                 E
Then I wanted to be with you

When you showed me your eyes
Whispered love the skies             (???)
Then I wanted to stay with you

CaddG       Am(?)
Inside me I feel
CaddG       Am
Alone and unreal
        D
And the way you kiss
                 G                     D
Will always be a very special thing to me

When I lay still at night
Seeing stars high and light
Then I wanted to be with you

When the rooftops shone dark
All alone saw a spark
Spark of love just to stay with you

Inside me I feel...

If I mention your name
Turn around on a chain
Then the sky opens up for you

When we grew very tall
When I saw you so small
Then I wanted to stay with you

Inside me I feel...

Next comes a chord progression which leads into the main part of the song,

which is one bar each of:

   A#  C#  A  G  D  A#  D#  A

Then the verses...

Verse I

A#

In the sad town

     A

Cold iron hands clap

    D                  A

The party of clowns outside

D                      A

Rain falls in grey far away

A#      D#                A#   G#

Please, please, baby lemonade

Verse II follows the same chord progression as verse I:

In the evening

Sun going down when

The Earth streams in in the morning

Send a cage through the post

Make your name like a ghost

Please, please, baby lemonade

Verse III alters the progression slightly:

A#

I'm screaming

A

I met you this way

       D               A

You're nice to me like ice

G

In the clock they sent

          D

Through a washing machine

A#                         A

Come around, make it soon, so alone

A#      D#                A#  G#

Please, please, baby lemonade

Then comes a guitar solo, which is played over the same chord

progression that leads into the verses (A# C# A ...).

After this, verses I and II are repeated, and then the

song closes with A# G# played repeatedly (in the fashion of

the end of the verse) with the intro chord progression played over it,

which fades out...

A7

It's an idea, someday. In my tears, my dreams.

C

Don't you want to see her proof,

life that comes of no harm.

Dm

You and I, and Dominoes, day goes by...

A7 (carry on as per first verse)

Well, you and I in place, wasting time on Dominoes.

A day so dark, so warm, life that comes of no harm.

You and I and Dominoes, time goes by...

  Fireworks and heat, someday.

  Colder shallows stickle play.

Overheard a lark today. Losing when my mind's astray

Don't you want to know, with your pretty hair?

  Stretch out your hand,

Black fields in an echo falls away...

It's an idea, someday, in my tears, my dreams.

Don't you want to see her prove,

Life that comes of no harm.

You and I and Dominoes. The day goes by...

Keep strumming Dm to the end.

I think the words are right.

he dubbed multiple electric guitars riffing on E7 and doing other blusey stuff.

G        D7           A
love, my love, got no care

C  A     C   A
no care, no, no,

G           D7          A
pressing my feet to the ground

stand up right where you stand

all you have to do to call, is

hold her hand, stand a while and then

smile and we'll understand

                                             A            G

wine and drinking in the yard, there won't be

G            A
anybody very hard, there will be

G                          A
lots of things that we can do.......and all and more will be for

G    D7                  A
you, everything I knew I tried with you, but

F#                          E
everything to you was never easy, so I went ahead around my

you........it's

when I'm with you, to be with you,

to be alone...can only think:

"Why I am here? What's

 EFFERVESCING ELEPHANT

   G                          G7
An effervescing elephant with tiny eyes and great big trunk

     C                              C7
once whispered to the tiny ear, the ear of one inferior

     G
that by next June he'd die, Oh yeah!

                    D
Because the tiger would roam, the little one said,

       D7
"Oh my goodness -- I must stay at home!

    G                               G7
And every time I hear a growl, I know the tiger's on the prowl,

    C                                   C7
And I'll be really safe, you know, the elephant, he told me so."

G
And everyone was nervous, Oh yeah!

                    D                                  D7
And the message was spread to zebra, mongoose and the dirty hippopotamus

    G                                  G7
who wallowed in the mud and chewed his spicy hippo-plankton food

    C
and tended to ignore the word,

   C7                            G
referring to  survey I heard of stupid water bison

                                  D
Oh yeah!  And all the jungle took fright,

                           D7
and ran around for all the day and the night,

           G
But all in vain because, you see, the tiger came and said,

     G7              C
"Who me?  You know I wouldn't hurt not one of you --

  C                                  G
I much prefer something to chew, and you're all too scant."

   C                 D   G
Oh yeah!  He ate the elephant.

G                                    D

  A                  E

Dry Tears.

Crisp flax squeaks.  Tall reeds
      G              D
Make a circle of grey
     A
In a summer way, around man
B         A
 so don't drown

BRIDGE:

(This is the long section of strummed chords.  I'll count measures
in 6/8 in the following way:

  ------  ------ ------
  G       C      D      means a measure of G, one of C and one of D)

unusual chords used:
     Cadd9:  x32030

begin bridge:

  ------ ------ ------ ------ ------ ------ ------ ------ ------ ------
  Cadd9  C      Bb            Cadd9  C      Bb     F       Esus4
  ------ ------
  E

  ------ ------ ------ ------ ------ ------ ------ ------ ------ ------
  C7            F          F# G             A      D      G

  ------ ------
 (still G)

This is then repeated, except that the second time I think that
the first chord is C7 instead of Cadd9.

CLOSING:

(Note, I am highly uncertain -even moreso than I am about the rest of this
song- about the "accuracy" of the transcription here.  Correct me, please!)

unusual chords used:

I don't know what to call these things, but they're based on
the chord x02200 which I think is either A5 or Asus2.

The chords and my (incorrect) names for them are:

           A:       x02220
           A5:      x02200
           A5addF#: x02202
           A5addG#: x02204

Begin closing:

A      A5addG#
I'm trying

A      A5addG#
I'm trying

A5addF# A5
To find you

A5addF# A5
To find you

A      A5addG#
I'm living

A      A5addG#
I'm giving

A5addF# A5
To find you

A5addF# A5
To find you

The next part I think uses only the A chord:

A
I'm living
I'm living
I'm trying
I'm giving
(Switch at this point to A5 and diddle with it for a while)

SWAN LEE

e:-----------------
B:-1-4-1-----------
G:-------3s1s3-----
D:-------4s2s4-----

G#
Swan Lee got up at the runningford powwow and headed from the
            B
fire to his waiting canoe.
G#                                          B
Juttering squaw untied the wigwam door, the chief blew
           C#
smokerings two by two

G#
The land in silence stands

Swan Lee, his boat by a by the bank in the darkness loosened
the rope from the creepers entwined
A feather from the wing of a wild young eagle pointed to the
land where his fortune he'd find

The land in silence stands

Swan Lee paddled on from the land of his fathers his eyes
scanned the undergrowth on either side from the shore hung a
hot heavy creature infested tropic, Swan Lee had a bow by his
side

Swan Lee got in half on land half on water grizzly bear and
raccoon his fair
he followed his ears to the great waterfall for Swan Lee knew
people and his squaw was there

the land in silence stands

Suddenly the rush of the mighty great thunder confronted Swan
Lee as this song he sang
In the dawn with his squaw, he was battling homewards, it was
all written down by long Silas Lang

BIRDIE HOP

B---9----9----9------10---10---10-------------
G---10---10---10-----9----9----9--------------

Note:  Syd hammers on an E note, you'll have to listen to see where

C#
Birdie hop, he hop along
                     A
a lonely bird upon a window there, he, he,

there he blow, a windy snow, he knew the snow, the hoppy bird

    A(open)
The antelope ride around a parasol
just to see if he's a man enough to you meet you in the sand pit
in a flying kind of sighing in a meddlesome bay
you know the way, I see the flies

A(open)
She's a little kite the sort you think you might like to fire and like a kite
you get to see her everynight
you know the way
she's only paving her way, hate to complain, I see the flies

C#
Birdie hop he do, he hop along
                     A
a lonely bird upon a window there, he, he

there he blow, the windy snow, a hoppy bird

  A(open)
A camel woke up to a polished dawn
wouldn't look to see his feet had gone, he wouldn't like it
wouldn't have the strength to fight it, I see the flies

A(open)
I'm the only bird, a little third, I lost a quarter, I had a yearning to be
earning just a dollar a day and in a way you shouldn't like it
hate to complain, I see the flies

until he no longer knows what he is doing and ends the song)

BOB DYLAN BLUES
words and music by Syd Barrett
from the "Best of" album

transcribed by James <allfallup@aol.com>

"Bob Dylan Blues" is one of Syd's earliest songs, supposedly written in 1963 after seeing Dylan. The chorus sounds a bit like "Hard Rain's Gonna Fall." It has what is probably the most traditional structure of any Syd song; it follows a verse/verse/chorus progression with a intro/outro that changes keys. Somehow, the recording is off by a quarter-step.  To play along with the disc, you have to tune your guitar up a quarter-step.  (Remember, not a full half-step, a quarter-step!!). I might have misheard a lyric or two; specifically, the line in the forth verse  about his wallet and something else are fat.  I think he says cat (or gut?)? Are the lyrics about Dylan making money a response to some folk cry of sellout? Lastly, Syd fumbles up the chords in the first chorus.  Instead of writing out what is obviously a mistake, I have instead written how the chords are played in the remaining two choruses.

        C
Got the Bob Dylan blues
        F
And the Bob Dylan shoes
       C                          G
And my clothes and my hair's in a mess
        G                         C
But you know I just couldn't care less

Gonna write me a song
'Bout what's right and what's wrong
About God and my girl an' all that                        ?
Quiet while I make like a cat

Chorus:
             C               G
'Cause I'm a poet, don't you know it
        C             F
And the wind, you can blow it
       F                  G
'Cause I'm Mr. Dylan, the king
        G                     C
And I'm free as a bird on the wing

Roam from town to town
Guess, I get people down
But I don't care too much about that
'Cause my gut and my wallet are fat

Make a whole lotta dough
But I deserve it though
I got soul and good heart of gold
So I'll sing bout war and the cold

Chorus & repeat intro

Well, I sings bout dreams
and I rhymes it with seams
and it seams that my dream always means
but I can prophesy all kinds of things

Well, the guy that digs me
Should try hard to see
That he buys all my discs in a hat
And when I'm in town go see that

Chorus & repeat intro

TWO OF A KIND

Although it is credited as a Syd song, it is most likely that it was Rick Wright who actually wrote it.
